Who Are We

The Johns Hopkins University maintains the highest principles of integrity in research, education, service, and clinical care.  Generating new knowledge and transferring it for the benefit of society often requires interaction with commercial and other organizations outside the University. To advance knowledge and support its academic missions, the University supports and encourages many types of relationships with a wide variety of outside organizations.  However, some arrangements can give rise to conflicts of interests in research and may create actual, potential, or perceived risks to research integrity, objectivity, or the safety of research subjects.  In order to ensure that these arrangements are consistent with institutional policies and applicable regulations, they must be disclosed to the University and reviewed under the institution’s conflict of interest policies.

What We Do

The Office of Outside Interests (OOI)* is dedicated to promoting responsible interactions with industry, supporting a culture of research integrity, and assisting Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHUSOM) and/or Johns Hopkins Medicine faculty (JHM) and staff in research compliance. OOI administers JHU’s Conflict of Interest and Conflict of Commitment policy for the SOM and JHM faculty and staff. OOI reviews and manages outside activity disclosures received via eDisclose as well as conflicts of interest indications from the Office of Research Administration (ORA) and the Institutional Review Board (IRB). OOI’s mission is to support the ethical conduct of research. OOI is part of the Office of the Dean. We work closely with the Office of Research Administration (ORA), the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV).
